Pedestrians are at risk for a collision at any time they step near a road. Even if a person is walking on a sidewalk, in a parking lot, or in a crosswalk, unfortunately the risk for a pedestrian accident exists. In 2012 alone, there were 2,943 crashes involving pedestrians in the city of Chicago alone.

With all of these accidents taking place, the victims of these crashes should be aware of the implication of personal injury laws and traffic rules as they apply to their accident. As each collision revolves around a unique set of facts, it is a good idea to speak with a personal injury lawyer who handles pedestrian accidents in Chicago to learn about your legal options if you have been injured. You may be entitled to seek financial compensation to cover your losses including any medical bills you have incurred or are likely to incur in the future, wages you missed while you were unable to work, and even pain and suffering.

A Sunday evening collision between a motorcyclist and a pedestrian left both individuals in critical condition, according to local authorities. Police have confirmed that a 62-year-old man was riding on East Lake Avenue in Glenview when he collided with a 16-year-old female pedestrian who was crossing the street. At this time, officials have not said what caused the collision or whether negligence on the part of either party played a role.

Emergency medical crews responded to the scene and evaluated both the rider and the pedestrian for injuries. Both were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where they were initially listed in critical condition; the nature of their injuries and their prognoses are not clear at this time.

Police said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. and the incident is still being reviewed by area officials.

Urban areas like Chicago tend to experience a large amount of pedestrian traffic throughout the day as people walk to and from buildings, to public transportation, and even stroll around for exercise. Unfortunately in Chicago, the large number of pedestrians means that pedestrian accidents occur and often involve motor vehicles. These pedestrian crashes nearly always result in injuries to those involved and may even cause death, depending on the facts surrounding an individual collision.

Though nothing can erase these accidents once they have occurred, the victims of pedestrian crashes may be able to seek financial relief to restore them to their pre-accident states. Compensation may be available to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and even provide payment for pain and suffering in an accident if a pedestrian was hurt. The right to seek this relief belongs to a victim of a collision and is separate and distinct from any charges brought by the State of Illinois, meaning that a personal injury claim may be possible even if an at-fault driver did not receive a ticket in the crash. Speaking with a lawyer in Chicago who has experience representing pedestrian victims may help you understand your legal options if your have been hurt.

Police have identified a suspect they believe was responsible for a fatal pedestrian accident in September and charges have now been filed against the driver. Officials allege that a 26-year-old man was driving his sister’s vehicle to his home in Chicago in September when he turned into an alley on South Mason Avenue. The man reportedly struck a 37-year-old female pedestrian in the alley, running her over with his car, and then allegedly stopped his vehicle to check on the woman, who was unconscious. Officials allege that the driver then returned to his car and drove it some way before parking it and going to his home where he stayed until he went to work the next morning.

While at work, the suspect reportedly admitted that he struck a woman with his car and left her in an alley. The female victim in this case was found shortly after the crash and transported to an area hospital for emergency treatment but her injuries were too severe and she died as a result of the collision.

The suspect was arrested earlier this week and reportedly admitted to being involved in the crash. He currently faces one charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a crime under the laws of Chicago and Illinois and the man is currently being held in lieu of bail. It is not clear whether officials are considering any additional charges in this case.

In 2012, 76,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents across the county. Many of those injuries occurred in Chicago, a busy city with a large pedestrian population. With many residents walking for transportation and even more utilizing public transportation, pedestrians are a constant site in Chicago, whether downtown or elsewhere.

When walking, pedestrians are at risk for collisions with bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, vans, and buses, to name a few. Though pedestrians have a legal right to walk along sidewalks and to cross the street at pedestrian crosswalks, others in the area do not always acknowledge or respect the rights of pedestrians, leading to dangerous situations where an accident may occur. Common injuries sustained in a pedestrian accident in Chicago include broken or fractured bones, open and closed head injuries, bruises, scrapes, and lacerations, and internal injuries. In the worst accidents, a pedestrian may lose his or her life in an accident.

When negligence or a mistake on the part of someone involved causes an accident to occur, the victims of that crash may be entitled to financial relief for their losses, including any medical and rehabilitative expenses incurred. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago who has experience representing pedestrian victims may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in a collision.

Police were alerted to a collision involving a hit-and-run driver and a pedestrian shortly after midnight this morning in Logan Square. Witnesses reported that a driver struck a pedestrian in the area of the 2700 block of North Hamlin Avenue before speeding off from the scene without stopping to report the incident or checking on the condition of the pedestrian. Authorities in the area noticed a vehicle matching the description of the suspected at-fault driver and pulled over the vehicle, apprehended the driver, and arrested him for his involvement in the crash.

Emergency crews responded to the scene of the impact and assessed the pedestrian’s condition. The individual, whose name and age have not been released, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where physicians tended to all injuries. At last report, the pedestrian was in stable condition.

If you live in, work in, or visit Chicago on occasion, chances are that you have walked along the city’s sidewalks and likely crossed the streets at an intersection or two. That is because that at some point, most people are pedestrians. Even those that commute by car, bus or train tend to walk from a parking spot or a transit stop to their final destination. With everyone taking on the role of a pedestrian, it would seem that the safety of walkers in the city would be a top concern among drivers.

Unfortunately, though, that is not always the case. Too often, drivers pay attention only to other motor vehicles on the roads and not to those walking. This leads to thousands of pedestrian accidents in Chicago and across the rest of Illinois every year with many of those accidents resulting in injuries to the pedestrians involved. In some accidents, those drivers and passengers inside an involved vehicle may also be hurt in the crash.

When injuries result due to a driver’s negligence, those harmed may be entitled to seek relief for their damages, including any medical and surgical bills they must incur for treatment related to the accident. Speaking with a lawyer who represents injury victims may help you understand if you are entitled to such relief, and if so, what types of claims may be available to you after an accident.

In the worst collisions, a pedestrian may lose his or her life due to the crash and may leave behind loved ones who will experience that loss forever. Though no amount of relief can ever cover this type of damage, the family members of a victim who is killed may have the right to seek a claim for their damages and relief may be able to ease the financial burden left when a loved one is taken.

Police in Chicago responded to the scene of a pedestrian accident in the south side neighborhood of Pill Hill around 5:30 this morning. When they arrived, they determined that a female had been walking in the area of 9100 South Euclid Avenue when an unknown vehicle approached and struck her, causing injuries that led to her death. Officials have not yet identified the vehicle or the driver involved in the crash and are still investigating at this time.

Nationally, thousands of pedestrians are killed every year in motor vehicle collisions. Many of those take place right in Chicago as people walk to and from work, to school, or simply just for pleasure. In most cases, pedestrian accidents are preventable collisions that can be blamed on a mistake or error on one or more individuals involved. Whether a driver is distracted, texting or talking on a cell phone, speeding, or driving the wrong direction, a pedestrian does not stand much of a chance of a driver is acting in a negligent manner and ignoring the safety of others in the area.

Drunk drivers and drivers under the influence of drugs pose a serious threat to pedestrians as well as other motorists across the state. Intoxicants like alcohol work by decreasing the speed body’s central nervous system, restricting a driver’s ability to make quick decisions, think clearly, and respond appropriately to changing conditions while on the road. Recognizing this danger, legislatures across the nation have passed laws making driving under the influence illegal in an effort to keep these hazardous drivers off the road. Despite these efforts, motorists continue to drive drunk in Chicago and continue to put the safety of others at risk on a regular basis.

The laws in Chicago can provide relief to those who have been victimized by the actions of a drunk or otherwise negligent driver by allowing these victims the opportunity to recover financially. This relief can be sought through the use of a civil claim for damages that may be available even if a traffic ticket or criminal charge was not brought against a responsible driver, depending on all the facts and circumstances surrounding a crash. Speaking with a lawyer who representing the victims of car accidents may help you understand if you are entitled to relief or what legal options may exist if you have been injured in a crash.

Police in Chicago have reported that a two vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian this weekend was caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol. According to officials, a 26-year-old man was driving westbound on North Avenue when he reportedly ran a red light and struck a stopped car at the southbound ramp from the Kennedy Expressway. The force of the impact caused the second car to roll over and slide into a 73-year-old pedestrian near the intersection. The crash caused injuries too severe to the pedestrian and he died as a result of the incident.

At some point, everyone is a pedestrian. They must walk to a car, truck, bus or train most days. And when they are walking, pedestrians are always at a risk for being involved in an accident. In many situations, pedestrians have the right-of-way, meaning that vehicular traffic must yield to those walking. But that does not always happen and when a car fails to yield, an accident often occurs.

Unfortunately, one common factor among pedestrian accidents in Chicago is the injuries that result. When compared to other types of car accidents, those involving pedestrians are much more likely to end in serious injuries or death because pedestrians have little to no protection in the event of a crash. Unlike drivers and passengers in a car, pedestrians are not surrounding by metal and safety features like air bags which limits the pedestrian’s chances of walking away from a crash uninjured.

Yet pedestrians who are victimized in accidents are not without relief. The laws in Chicago and the rest of Illinois allow these individuals to seek a recovery for their damages, including any medical bills they have been forced to incur. Often a claim can be brought against an at-fault driver or the owner of the responsible vehicle. In other cases, the pedestrian victim may be entitled to bring a claim against his or her own insurance company. As the facts of each accident are unique, it is a good idea to speak with a personal injury lawyer experienced in pedestrian cases to learn whether you have a valid claim and whether you are entitled to relief.

Police in Skokie learned of an accident involving a pedestrian on Sunday night and responded to the scene of the crash in the 3400 block of Dempster Street. When they arrived shortly after 9:00 p.m., they determined that a 30-year-old man was crossing Dempster when a car driven by an 18-year-old man approached. The car struck the pedestrian for reasons that are not yet clear, leading to serious injuries to the walker and the need for medical treatment at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Unfortunately, the pedestrian’s injuries were grave and he died some time later as a result of the crash.

Police are still investigating the incident and trying to determine whether anyone involved in the crash acted in a negligent manner. At this time, no citations have been issued.

The time of year does not have much effect on the presence of pedestrian traffic in Chicago. While the spring and summer months may come with an increase in the number of walkers, pedestrians can be seen hitting the streets in any month, walking to and from work, heading to school, or even running errands.

Pedestrians have many rights and responsibilities under the laws in Illinois and they must follow each of them. Failing to do so may place an individual at risk of a pedestrian accident occurring. But in the majority of accidents between a vehicle and a pedestrian, the vehicle bears some or all of the responsibility. Failing to yield the right-of-way, failing to notice a pedestrian, or driving in an area marked exclusively for pedestrian traffic are just some of the ways drivers are often at fault for a pedestrian collision.

When a driver errs or acts negligently and causes a pedestrian accident, the victims of that crash may be entitled to relief for the damages they sustain. Often, damages include incurred expenses like medical and surgical bills as well as other damages like pain and suffering endured. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer who represents pedestrians in Chicago may help you understand whether you have a valid claim for your damages and whether you are entitled to relief.

Police responded to a collision in East Garfield Park on the city’s west side on Tuesday night. When they arrived, they determined that a pickup truck and a pedestrian collided, leaving the pedestrian with critical injuries. Emergency personnel transported the pedestrian, a 33-year-old man, to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment but his injuries were too severe and he died early Wednesday morning.

At this time, officials believe that the victim was crossing the street near the intersection of Van Buren Street and Pulaski Road when a pickup truck approached the area. The truck was driven by a 38-year-old man who police say did not have a valid license at the time. The truck driver allegedly failed to yield to the pedestrian and caused the collision.

The driver of the truck reportedly received citations for failure to yield, driving on a suspended license, and driving without insurance for his role in the crash.

Pedestrian safety should be a concern for everyone in Illinois because at one point or another, everyone is a pedestrian. Some people may walk more than others but for the vast majority of residents, it is necessary to travel by foot at some time in the day, whether it is walking to work, walking a child to school, or even just walking to your car. Despite the fact that so many people travel by foot, the safety of pedestrians is not as discussed as it should be, even though there were nearly 3,000 pedestrian accidents in Chicago alone in 2010.

When a pedestrian is involved in an accident and the pedestrian in injured, the laws in Chicago and in Illinois may provide that victim with the right to seek a recovery against the individual responsible for the crash. In some accidents, it can be the driver of a car or the owner of the vehicle that bears legal fault. In others, a company, employee, or even a city can be liable. As each accident is unique, it is a good idea to speak with a personal injury lawyer following a crash so that you can learn about the legal options following your collisions.

Unfortunately, many accidents involving pedestrians turn tragic when a pedestrian loses his or her life. That was the case in Joliet over the weekend when a 62-year-old man was struck by a fleeing driver. The victim in that crash lost his life due to the severity of his injuries.

Police are still investigating the incident and trying to determine what caused the collision between the man, who was walking home on Center Street shortly before midnight, and a car that was the in the area. Police believe that the victim was hit by the car and that he was dragged some distance before the driver of the car sped off from the scene. The driver did not stop to see if the victim needed help and did not call authorities to report the accident, in violation of local and state laws.

Police are asking for any information regarding the accident as they continue to look into the factors surrounding the crash on Saturday night. They are also trying to determine whether an altercation at a neighboring bar involving the victim may have preceded the crash.

When a collision between a pedestrian and an automobile occurs, the pedestrian almost always sustains injuries, and too often, loses his or her life due to the crash. A pedestrian is no match for the large, heavy size and unforgiving nature of a car or truck and therefore is forced to absorb much of the impact.

When a pedestrian accident is due to the negligence of a driver or other individual, the victim of that crash may be entitled to seek relief for their losses. In Chicago, pedestrians who sustain injuries may be able to bring a civil claim to recover for the medical and surgical bills they have incurred, lost wages they are unable to earn, and pain and suffering they are forced to endure. Speaking with an injury lawyer who represents pedestrian accident victims will help you understand what legal options may be available to you.

Unfortunately an accident happened in January that left a pedestrian dead. Now, authorities believe they have found the responsible driver and have charged her with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report a crash with a pedestrian.

The incident occurred on January 25 on South Ewing, shortly before 4:00 p.m. A 44-year-old female was walking in the area and was struck by an SUV. Following an investigation, police identified a 16-year-old female suspect they believe was driving at the time of the crash. When they spoke with the teenager, the girl’s mother allegedly admitted that the girl was driving the SUV at the time of the accident, and reportedly, the girl admitted her involvement to at least two separate people. If convicted of the charges against her, the girl, who is being charged as an adult, could face jail time.

The victim in the crash lost her life due to the severe nature of her injuries.

In 2010 alone, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related accidents with another 70,000 pedestrians suffering injuries in crashes in the United States. Many of these accidents occur at intersections where pedestrians and vehicles occupy the same space, though they should not do so at the same time.

The more an area is used by both motorists and pedestrians, the more likely that collisions between the two groups will occur. In Chicago, there are walkers and drivers on every street and in every intersection but in some of the suburbs, these shared areas are much less common. Yet in nearly every suburb, the areas surrounding Metra stations see hundreds if not thousands of cars and pedestrians every weekday.

Victims of these accidents are almost always likely to sustain injuries that can range from mild or severe. When a pedestrian accident is caused by the negligence of a driver and the pedestrian sustains injuries, the laws in Chicago and the surrounding cities may entitle the victim to bring a civil claim for any damages incurred. Whether or not a claim is available is something that an injury lawyer can help you learn after an accident.

But in the end, even making a recovery for injuries is not as good as preventing an accident from every occurring. Officials in Mundelein feel this way and believe that the addition of a pedestrian bridge may separate types of traffic enough to reduce collisions, preventing injuries and saving lives.

At a Village meeting earlier this week, officials confirmed they will re-apply for the Illinois Commerce Commission Grade Crossing Safety Fund which provides up to $2 million to help address the issue of pedestrian traffic safety and to reduce pedestrian accidents.

The bridge, if funded, will connect the Metra station in Mundelein with an area that will host a new village hall that will open next summer. Other businesses may be entering the area as well, providing both Metra and non-Metra users with a safe, efficient means to cross the area safety and without the risk of oncoming traffic. The bridge is planned to be 150 feet wide and will provide a shorter means of travel from the two areas to be linked than what currently exists.

In addition to reducing potential pedestrian accidents, village officials also believe that pedestrian traffic may be more easily controlled in the area, leading to a more efficient use of the property and of the surrounding streets.
