Worker Killed in Fall from Roof

5615.jpgFor more than 100 years, Illinois has had laws designed to provide for workers’ compensation, a series of benefits that are available to help employees who are hurt on-the-job. Despite the long history of this legislation and its corresponding protections, many who work in Chicago and the rest of the state are unaware of their rights under the law and are not sure whether they have a valid claim if they are injured.

In some respects, Chicago workers’ compensation cases are straight forward: when a worker is hurt on the job, generally he or she has the right to relief. Though these cases should present few complications, the reality is much different. Employers often deny valid claims brought by the injured or victims may be offered a fraction of the value of their claim in settlement. As these issues can be complex, many workers find it beneficial to consult with and work with a personal injury attorney in Chicago to ensure their rights are protected.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. yesterday, a man that authorities said was working on a rooftop fell from the area, causing him critical injuries that eventually caused his death. The incident happened on Galitz Street in Skokie and was initially reported as a man falling from a window. When authorities arrived on the scene, they determined that the man actually fell from the roof while he was performing unspecified work there. Though emergency crews tended to the man and transported him to an area hospital, his injuries were too severe and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The loss of a life by an employee is a devastating catastrophe that cannot be righted. However, the surviving family members of a worker killed on-the-job may have the right to seek financial compensation in such cases to help ease the financial burden left behind by their loved one’s passing.
